How CED Approaches Cover Design

A behind-the-scenes look at our philosophy, process, and creative guidance for authors.

Book covers are more than a marketing tool. A well-designed cover should reflect the author’s vision, connect with their target audience, and effectively communicate the soul of their story. For this post, we had a question-and-answer session with one of our talented cover designers to learn more about her approach and philosophy to cover design and what that process looks like.

Question #1: Highlight your unique design philosophy and how it ties into CED’s overall philosophy of designing book covers.

“My design philosophy centers on crafting visually compelling book covers that spark curiosity while remaining true to the heart of the story, the author’s unique vision, and the expectations of the target audience.”

Her approach to design is rooted in three core values: dependability, integrity, and excellence. Her goal is to create a process built on trust and mutual respect, where authors feel supported and empowered from concept to final delivery. She prioritizes authentic representation, ensuring each cover reflects the spirit and message of the book. Lastly, she believes the finished product should be something the author is genuinely proud of.

Question #2: How does your process usually start? What makes you creative and gets you in the zone? Are there specific programs and software you use?

“Each project begins with a personal conversation with the author—an opportunity to explore design styles, uncover the book’s overall vision, and provide insight into the creative process.”

Before diving into design, she takes time to learn the heart behind the project. These conversations will help spark creativity to begin designing. She also prays through each project, asking the Lord for insight and direction and ensuring she stays intentional with each project she is given.

When she begins the design process, she typically uses Adobe software and carefully selected stock imagery to bring the author’s vision to life.

Question #3: Do you have any practical insights that could help potential clients or readers?

“Avoid leaning on imagery that’s been heavily saturated in the market. For instance, many Christian titles emphasize themes like God’s harvest, resulting in countless book covers filled with wheat fields and golden crops. While the symbolism is beautiful, it risks blending into the crowd.”

It can be easy to lean into trends and unoriginal methods. Instead, our designer recommends exploring modern and thoughtful visual metaphors that communicate the same ideas more originally. This helps the book stand out and invites the readers into a fresh perspective. She also reminds readers that sometimes less is more. A clean, focused design often speaks louder than one filled with too many unnecessary elements.

Conclusion

From start to finish, our cover designer’s approach is guided by the values of dependability, integrity, and excellence. She believes a cover should look beautiful while honoring the author’s message. Each project begins with meaningful conversations and prayer, allowing her to understand the heart of the story before shaping it visually with design tools. Along the way, she encourages authors to think beyond overused visuals and embrace original thoughts to help their books stand out.
